New Mexico Alliance for Life Calls on a Fair Up or Down Vote in Full Senate for Common-Sense Protections HB 390 AND HB 391 After Sham Committee Hearing URGENT ACTION: CALL NM STATE SENATORS TODAY New Mexico Alliance for Life is calling on the New Mexico State Senate to hear HB 390 the Late-Term Abortion Ban and 391 Parental Notification of Abortion Act on the Senate Floor, after the sham hearing before Senate Public Affairs committee. Additionally the New Mexico Catholic Conference of Bishops and the Albuquerque Journal called on these bills to be voted on by the full Senate because of the life and death nature and New Mexico's growing status as a destination for the barbaric practice of late-term abortion. "Yesterday five Senate Democrats not only ignored testimony from former late-term abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino, describing the barbaric late-term abortion procedures but Senators Ivey Soto and Jacob Candelaria repeatedly referenced the incorrect version of HB 390 which did not include the adopted amendments," said Elisa Martinez, New Mexico Alliance for Life Executive Director. "Last week Senate Democrats promised HB 390 and HB 391 would receive a fair hearing in the committees which they were assigned and that did not happen." After last week's attempt to send both HB 390 and HB 391 to a "Committee of the Whole," supporters of these bills were told by Senate Democrats that it must work its way through the committee process and would receive a fair hearing. However, the Senate Public Affairs hearing lacked intellectual honesty. Sens. Daniel Ivey-Soto and Jacob Candelaria referenced versions of the bill without the adopted amendments as a defense to support abortion up to the day of birth and did not submit a single question to the expert witness panel, including New Mexico Alliance for Life attorney who helped draft the legislation. In criticizing the bill, Ivey-Soto quoted a line that had already been removed by amendment weeks ago-- in the first hearing, irresponsibly haranguing the bill's sponsor on language no longer in the bill. More troubling, Ivey-Soto claimed that the Late-Abortion Ban Act has a criminal penalty. While the existing Partial Birth Abortion Ban statute has a criminal penalty, the proposed Late-Term Abortion Ban Act-- the actual legislation he voted on does not. "It is troubling and tragic that while considering a matter of life and death, Senators Ivey-Soto and Jacob Candelaria did not use the current version of the bill, effectively making their decision to allow innocent, unborn children to continue to be killed up to the day of birth, based off of inaccurate information," Martinez added. "This is nothing short of disrespect to the people of New Mexico, the conduct of Senators Ivey-Soto and Candelaria in this life and death matter was entirely irresponsible ." With five days left in the 2015 Legislative Session New Mexico Alliance for Life calls on Senate Democrats to to send HB 390 and HB 391 to a vote on the Senate Floor. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR NM STATE SENATOR AND THE SENATORS LISTED WHILE THERE IS STILL TIME. TELL THEM TO SEND HB 390 AND HB 391 TO THE SENATE FLOOR. LIVES ARE AT STAKE.
