NM 2017 Legislative Session Adjourns, Anti-Life Bills Defeated

Progressive Measures Backed By Out-of-State Special Interests Lose in NM

Picture
Sine Die: On Saturday, March 18th the New Mexico 2017 legislative session adjourned. With your help, we were able to defeat a number of extreme, anti-life measures, backed by out-of-state special interests!  SB 282 and HB 473 never made it to debate on the Senate and House floor, respectively.

Thanks to your phone calls, emails and hard work, SB 282, the so-called 'Hospital Patient Protections Act,' died. SB 282 was sponsored by 'Catholic' Jerry Ortiz y Pino and would have forced Christians health care professionals to refer patients for abortions and religiously-affiliated hospitals to perform abortions across New Mexico.

Also, HB 473, the 'Decriminalize Abortion Act', was sponsored by House progressives: Speaker Brian Egolf (HD- 47 Santa Fe), Deborah Armstrong (HD 17- ABQ), Christine Trujillo (HD-25 ABQ), Joanne Ferrary (HD-37 Dona Ana), and Harry Garcia (HD-69 Grants).  This bill was an aggressive abortion measure that aimed to decriminalize abortion, allowing non-physicians to perform abortions.  Sadly, the unconstitutional measure also sought to remove New Mexico statute that protects healthcare providers from participating in an abortion against their religious or moral objections.

OTHER VICTORIES FOR LIFE

These victories could not be possible without your help!  Physician Assisted suicide, in the form of HB 171 and SB 252, the 'End of Life Options Act', also failed in both the Senate and House. House progressives led by Speaker Egolf, refused to allow a vote on HB 171 in the House Judiciary Committee because they knew it would fail--even with a majority of Democrats. SB 252 was killed on the Senate floor in a bipartisan 22 - 20 vote, with six Democrats and 16 Republicans voting against the measure.

A big 'thank you' to all our pro-life champions in the legislature, our coalition partners including the American Academy of Medical Ethics, The NM Conference of Catholic Bishops, Right to Life Committee of New Mexico, the HUB of New Mexico and all who showed up to testify, send emails, and make phone calls. As we continue to work together in a unified effort, we will see New Mexico change from a culture of death to a culture of life.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS COMING SOON

This week we're hitting the ground running as we transition from legislative action, to leading the charge on the investigation of UNM Health Sciences Center and Southwestern Women's Options harvesting of infant bodies for experimentation.  Stay tuned as we release our final analysis of the 2017 NM Legislative Session and more exciting announcements coming soon.

Dems in House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee table Pro-life Legislation

House Committee Kills Bills, Uphold Inhumane Abortion Practices

Picture
Sunday, Democrat members of the House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee voted down HB 220 and HB 221 in 3-2 party line votes.  HB 220 would protect women and infants from dangerous late-term abortions, while HB 221 would require that a young woman notify her parent before having an abortion. (More photos and updates below).

Expert witness Maryrose Turner MD, testified in support of HB 220 and demonstrated a dismemberment D & E abortion on infants up to 24 weeks, "What is the baby feeling during this procedure? It is well established in the medical literature that babies by 20 weeks gestation have developed pain receptors. It has been the standard of care for decades for premature infants to receive pain relief during procedures in the neonatal intensive care unit."
"In fetal surgery for conditions such as urinary system blockage, hydrocephalus, or congenital diaphragmatic hernia, the mother must receive general anesthesia so that the baby is also sufficiently anesthetized for the operation. Dr. Turner also said, "By New Mexico's animal cruelty statute, [the late-term abortion] procedure is considered inhumane. You must understand how a second trimester abortion is performed, and judge if that is also inhumane."

Denae Romero, mother of baby Anica (above), also spoke in favor of HB 220 and described herself as speaking on behalf of thousands, "I stand before you with what we are talking about and what we are fighting for," said mother of baby Anneka motioning to her daughter, "It's not within our right to make that decision. Faith aside, science aside, we owe [babies] the right, as human beings, to have a shot to live.  If something happens, something happens, but we should not make that decision.
"Because you see these demonstrations on tables and it's just a doll, it's easy because you don't see the blood, you don't see it so its not real," baby Anneka's mother continued, "The numbers and the statistics are not real.  This is a baby [holding child]  Anneka. Let this be more than numbers.  Let this about more than politics. New Mexico is a mess, everything is a mess, please think of Anneka, a baby."  Thanks to all expert witnesses including Dr. Turner, Cindy Vandi, RN and ultrasound technician for Care Net of Valencia county.

Parental Notification, Abortion and Child Abuse:  The Cover Up Continues Thanks to House Democrats

HB 221, the Parental Notification of Abortion included expert witness testimony from Sierra Schroff and Clay Schroff of the Zoe Project, who work with at risk children, including victims of human trafficking, Laura Rosecrans of Surrendered Hearts Abortion Recovery, a survivor of rape and forced abortion as a minor and others. Elisa Martinez, Executive Director for NM Alliance for Life also served as expert witness for HB 221 and read actual cases of child abuse victims taken for abortions:  "there are hundreds of reported cases of victims, underage girls brought in for an abortion by the very person who is abusing them, because it covers up the abuse.  Hundreds of cases are filed against the abortion clinics, but all too often because of lack of parental consent or notification laws parents may not know what is going on with their child.  Local clinics either may not have the resources, or the will, or perhaps they are turning a blind eye to the victims."

"We have to start looking at this issue, not through the lens of politics, but through the lens of what is best for our children and what will protect them best from exploitation," said Martinez. "This sexual abuse is happening on a daily basis and parental notification only serves to give these clinics a necessary tool to be able to detect and identify abuse."

KOB 4 and KRQE 13 both covered the results of the House CPAC hearings on HB 220 and HB 221.  Make sure to weigh in on the comments section of these reports, share this information and help us continue to shed a light on the darkness in our state.

Thanks to all our bills sponsors, expert witnesses, the pastors and prayer teams that fought for these common sense protections. Many are inspired by the heartfelt testimony from citizens across the state who witnessed for life yesterday, who, unlike the abortion industry, do not have a financial benefit in this cause. Additionally those who showed up in support of life believe the tide is turning, as more citizens become aware of these atrocities taking place. We at NMAFL are encouraged by your support and concern for women, unborn children, our girls, families and our state. We will not stop fighting until these injustices end.
Historic Praise and Worship in the Rotunda was a huge success!  Thanks to Pastor Brian Alarid, Pastor and NM state Rep. David Adkins, Pastor Richard Mansfield, John Robb, Pastor Vince Torres for organizing and all who attended this historic service.

NM Progressives: Assault on Life at NM Legislature Continues

Infant Born Alive Protection Act Dies in Committee, Other Bills to Be Heard This Sunday

Picture
In a party-line vote Thursday, Democrat members of the House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee voted down HB 37, the Infant Born Alive Protection Act. Public testimony and expert witnesses included the Honorable Lt. Governor John Sanchez, a notable occasion on the House floor. Hearings for HB 220 and 221 were delayed by the Chairman for this Sunday at 10 AM (please attend, more information below).
Albuquerque Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse, Monique Ramirez, works with premature infants and served as an expert witness for HB 37:  "These babies have just experienced a very traumatic event and are still alive. Shouldn't that tell you something? That obviously this baby is meant to be alive and full resuscitation should take place and all efforts should be given to this baby to help this baby survive."

"If these late abortion survivors are not given proper resuscitation, the next thing we can provide for these babies would be palliative care, by making their last moments of life as comfortable as possible," Ramirez said, "Even if this is simply to hold the baby while they take their last breath so the last thing that baby feels is love, which we all know is a beautiful thing. Working in an intensive care unit, not all these stories have a happy ending, but we do our best to make the death process a pain-free experience for the baby. They're given some sedation so that they are calm and relaxed; then they are held as we take out their breathing tubes so that love is the last thing they feel. I don't know about you, but I hope that I am surrounded by love as I take my last breath here on earth."

Despite heart-wrenching testimony from Monique Ramirez and countless others, the Democrat committee members coldly voted down this humane, life-saving measurer--thereby continuing the cycle of abuse and neglect of infants who survive abortions in our state. A big thanks to our bill sponsors Rep. Rod Montoya, Rep. David Gallegos and all who attended.  Upset? You can do something about it: join us on Sunday and help us hold these leaders accountable.

Don't Miss It! Late-Term Ban and Parental Notification of Abortion Hearings on Sunday

HCPAC Chairman Eliseo Alcon also postponed the public hearings for HB 220 the Late Term Abortion Ban and HB 221 Parental Notification of Abortion, disregarding expert witness and others who took time off work to testify.  The hearings are now scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m. Get your FACT SHEETS HERE for both bills and be prepared to give your testimony in support of both bills.

COME WORSHIP IN THE ROTUNDA!
