NMAFL Calls for Special Prosecutor

Yesterday, New Mexico Alliance for Life, New Mexico Right to Life, Michelle Garcia Holmes former Chief of Staff for the Office of the Attorney General, and Students for Life participated in our press conference, calling for a special prosecutor to investigate claims of illegal aborted baby body part harvesting by the University of New Mexico (UNM). This comes on the date the statute of limitations runs out on seven month baby brains harvested by a UNM doctor "to dissect w/summer camp students" in 2012.
"Attorney General Balderas has allowed 83 criminal claims to expire since receiving Congress' 300-page criminal referral in June of last year," said Elisa Martinez, Director of New Mexico Alliance for Life.  Read more below about what you can do to help.

Martinez read a statement by Congressman Steve Pearce, "It is unacceptable that New Mexico's Attorney General Hector Balderas is taking a buffet style approach to the laws he chooses to enforce and those he does not.  He is allowing criminal claims against the University of New Mexico to expire, ignoring all sense of responsibility and duty that he owes to the women, children, people, and rule of law here in New Mexico."
 
"Each week that goes by, Balderas allows criminal complaints to expire and women are denied justice," concluded Martinez. "Balderas doesn't care about women, so it is time for the state to appoint a special prosecutor to do his job for him."

 In this incident, which happened in 2012, UNM Health Sciences faculty members sought whole fetal brains supplied by an abortion clinic so the brains could be dissected for "summer camp students," according to the panel report. The group and panel allege this violated state law. UNM officials at the time acknowledged that a six-week "Neuroscience Summer Experience" in 2012 and 2014 involved fetal brain dissections. They said it was not a camp, but an educational research program.

In addition, Martinez said at least one of the two abortion clinics in the state has violated the law with consent forms. Citing a 2012 consent form, she said the form a woman must sign to authorize an abortion procedure at Southwest Women's Options also includes the consent for the tissue to be donated for scientific research, so a woman then is limited in her choice because she cannot authorize the abortion and decline the research.

"Their right to choose was violated," Martinez said. "The fundamental rights of women must be protected."

Contact the NM Attorney General's Office and ask him why is he allowing claims to expire, why has he not made an indictment? 83 claims have expired since he received a criminal referral from Congress last June.
