BREAKING: New Mexico Alliance for Life Calls for Investigation of NM Abortion Clinics

Thursday, a series of questions compiled by New Mexico Alliance for Life were presented to New Mexico legislators concerning the alarming practices of unregulated abortion clinics in New Mexico:  "In light of this national scandal, thank you for bringing these serious concerns to my attention" stated Rep. Rod Montoya (R-San Juan).  "I will work on getting answers to these serious issues. I hope to find that such disturbing practices aren't taking place in New Mexico."

Due to the recent investigation revealing Planned Parenthood's harvesting and unlawful sale of body parts from aborted babies, along with the outright violation of the partial-birth abortion ban,  NMAFL was the first to ask leaders in New Mexico to investigate the abortion industry in our state, not only Planned Parenthood but also the University of New Mexico's School of Medicine Family Planning Program and the UNM Center for Reproductive Health abortion clinic, which are funded by you--New Mexico taxpayers.

Additionally, NMAFL was the first to raise concern about the practice of harvesting aborted baby body parts in NM.  We have shared with you the disturbing practice clearly stated on Southwestern Women's Options consent form:  "I understand that tissue and parts will be removed during the procedure, and I consent to their examination and their use in medical research and their disposal by the clinic and/or physician in the manner they deem appropriate" View the full copy of consent form obtained by NMAFL here.

Here are some of the additional questions and concerns NMAFL has identified and were presented to New Mexico Legislators:

• On the UNM OB-GYN Department website, there is a reference made to "high level research and clinical skills in contraception and abortion." What type of abortion related research is being conducted at UNM?    Is the UNM Center for Reproductive Health participating in the unlawful sale or trafficking of aborted baby body parts or partial-birth abortion as revealed in the Planned Parenthood investigation?

• What relationship does UNM have with Planned Parenthood in New Mexico? What is the nature of the relationship between UNM and late-term abortionist Dr. Curtis Boyd? Are these relationships based on a mutual profit motive?

• What oversight does the legislature have over UNM, their abortion practices or affiliations? Without oversight, can we be sure that partial-birth abortions and the sale of body parts are not taking place, or if proper safety measures are in place for the women who are being practiced on?

• Speaker of the House Boehner has called for congressional hearings into Planned Parenthood. Several states are also investigating Planned Parenthood and their affiliates, can we find out what our flagship university is doing with public dollars and place some measure of oversight on New Mexico's completely unregulated abortion industry?

• Southwestern Women's Options consent form explicitly states that aborted baby body parts are being harvested in Albuquerque and used for research. What can be done to ensure that existing federal laws are not violated by New Mexico abortion businesses, including Southwestern Women's Options, UNM Center for Reproductive Health and Planned Parenthood in New Mexico?

New Mexico Alliance for Life is calling upon our elected officials to hold the big abortion industry in New Mexico including Planned Parenthood affiliates, Southwestern Women's Options and the University of New Mexico Women's Health abortion clinic accountable to the law and for our tax dollars to stop subsidizing these barbaric abortion practices.
